In reading this week, we worked on letters Ff and Pp. As we worked on these letter sounds, and reviewed previous sounds, we began to explore where we heard these sounds in words. It's not always at the beginning but may also be in the middle of a word or at the end. To figure it out, we practiced saying the words slowly. Using a picture of a train with an engine at the beginning, cars in the middle and a caboose at the end helped us understand this concept. We read some great poems and stories and practiced writing the letters correctly, too.
We are also working on rhyming. Using familiar nursery rhymes, we are learning to point under one word at a time, to identify some frequent sight words and to identify words that rhyme. The kids especially liked acting out some of the rhymes this week!
In math, we completed our explorations of the numbers 0-9. We have been working to understand the meanings of those numbers, write them correctly and even spell them. This week, we used Ten Frames to represent those numbers in a new way. Ask your child about the fun Ten Frame game we played on the iPads this week! Friday, we made our own pudding for snack so we could practice writing numbers as we ate!
In science, we began exploring the 5 senses. See if your child can name all 5! Singing the 5 senses song may help him/her remember. We used our sense of sight and some hand lenses to explore things in our room this week. Another day, we used our sense of touch to identify mystery shapes in a bag during a partner math game. We have also learned that sometimes we use all of our senses at once!
Early in the week, we completed our reading MAP tests in the computer lab. We all worked hard to do our best!
